The 2026 ASO Summer School was packed full of amazing experiences. It went by so fast, but the memories and friendships will last forever!

Ninety-six students travelled from across Australia to join us at the Australian National University in Canberra for two weeks of intense science education. They took part in tutorials, lectures, laboratory sessions, and field trips. The students experienced world class university facilities, campus life, science experts and educators, all whilst connecting with other science-loving students.

Our exemplary Summer School program was praised by visitors from Iceland and New Zealand this year, during a collaboration to exchange information. The Coordinator of the Iceland Science Olympiad team, Ólafur Patrick Ólafsson, Staff Biologist from University of Iceland, had a great experience despite the heatwave during the days of his visit. Liam Hewson, National Executive and Head Tutor of New Zealand International Biology Olympiad (NZIBO), gained insights to how our program is so successful. Thank you to Dr Julie Cooke, ASO Biology Program Director, and Juliey Beckman, ASO Biology Deputy Program Director, along with their team, for inspiring and motivating our international visitors.

As ASO Summer School drew to a close for another year, students were presented with their certificates and had their final dinner together.

The students were inspired by a personalised message from Associate Professor Stella Clark AOM, Chair of the ASI Board, who congratulated the cohort, “What you’ve completed over the past two weeks really is intense, and you did it by choice. During your summer holidays. That says a lot about your curiosity, your resilience, and your willingness to challenge yourselves.”

Stella encouraged them to think about ‘Science is not just the study of knowledge. It is a way of thinking. We say this a lot because it is true. Scientific thinking skills will be critical in whatever work you do in the future. They help you approach problems logically, question assumptions, and make decisions based on evidence. These are the skills that will set you apart, not just in science, but in life.”

This sentiment was reiterated by ASI Patron, Emeritus Professor Ian Chubb AC FAA FTSE FACE FRSN, former Chief Scientist of Australia, who was in attendance to congratulate the students and present their certificates. He shared his wisdom and motivated the young scientists, reminding them they will be instrumental contributors to “the future we want to build for this country.”

The students were congratulated by their Program Directors as they presented their certificates, praising them for their willingness to collaborate with their teams and handle challenges over the last two weeks. Everyone involved in ASO Summer School noted the increased confidence, knowledge and skills that the students will take with them, to continue their education, influence their futures and boost their communities.

The night unfolded into a celebration, filled with burgers, dancing, games, photo‑booth laughs, and final goodbyes.
