IXOM sponsorship provides the solution for regional student to attend ASO Summer School
“Summer School was an incredible experience that I am immensely grateful to have had the opportunity to attend. The two weeks were packed full of content – Summer School provided ample intellectual stimulation, going well beyond anything I’ve learned in high school.
I’ve always been intrigued by chemistry, yet my time at ANU was truly eye opening into this fascinating realm of study.
Summer School solidified that I would like to specifically study chemistry further at university; along with every other aspect, I’m grateful for that clarity. Living on campus at Wright Hall gave a strong insight into the university lifestyle that I will hopefully be living over the next few years.
The laboratories that I was lucky to learn in were a world of wonder; the range of equipment and chemicals available for us to use was easily 10x what I have been exposed to at school.
One aspect I am particularly proud of is the improvement in my lab skills over the two weeks. From titrations to TLC to synthesising crystals, labs were more than I could ever imagine.
One aspect that particularly surprised me was the teaching style – all of our tutors taught with a clear purpose to cultivate our understanding. This contrasted so starkly to my school coursework, which is primarily taught to maximise our exam grades, not necessarily expand our understanding.
At Summer School, our tutors’ passion was clear and shone through in their dedication to every student. Being in an environment where curiosity was encouraged definitely confirmed for a number of us that STEM is the right pathway for us.
As a STEM-interested student living in regional Queensland, it is often a struggle to find a community with similar interests and ambitions.
Summer School has been a unique opportunity to connect with like-minded peers. I’m eternally grateful for some of the lifelong friendships I’ve formed at Summer School.
I loved being in an environment surrounded by peers who inspire me to work hard and follow my ambitions. I’m infinitely grateful for my Summer School experience, and to everyone’s truly dedicated efforts to make it happen.”
